There can be little doubt that traditional Games of agility and strength
have been practised in the Highlands since very early days. Annual
gatherings began in 1820 as part of the revival of Tartan and Highland
Culture, and the Highland Games of Braemar was attended by Queen Victoria
in 1848. By this time the competitions were along similar lines as
they are today with traditional stone and hammer throwing, tossing
the caber, highland piping, from solo to pipe bands, dancing along
with track/field, running and jumping events.
